Well, this is not a shocker for you. If you know about St. Valentine, then yes, you are right. Valentine’s name comes from the name of St. Valentine only. St. Valentine’s Day was a feast day in the Catholic religion and it was added to the liturgical calendar around 500 AD.

This day was commemorated for the martyred saints who were named, Valentine. The differing legends celebrate three different saints called Valentine or Valentinus. There is very little evidence and factual stories about these men and there were conflicting reports of the St. Valentine’s Day story and so the feast day was removed from the Christian liturgical calendar in 1969.

As per the many stories, here is the first one about St. Valentine. So, as per the first story, Saint Valentine refused to convert to paganism and because of this, he was executed by Roman Emperor Claudius II. Before his execution happened, he somehow miraculously healed the daughter of his jailer, who then converted to Christianity along with his family.

Another story is about the practice of writing love letters to your valentine. So, the story says that St. Valentine wrote the first “valentine” card to a young girl who was his student with whom he fell in love while he was imprisoned. Right before his death, he wrote a letter to her and signed it as “From your Valentine,”. This phrase is still the most common phrase that people use to write to their lovers on cards and messages.

The next story is about the bishop called Saint Valentine of Terni. He was the true namesake of the holiday, this Saint Valentine was also executed.

The third story says that Saint Valentine was a Roman priest. He was known to perform weddings for soldiers forbidden to marry. During those times, there was a rule that the Roman emperor’s edict decreeing married soldiers as they did not make good warriors. Because of this, the young men could not marry. But, then Saint Valentine wore a ring with a Cupid on it which is a symbol of love and this sign helped soldiers recognize him. And, in a precursor to greeting cards, he handed out paper hearts to remind Christians of their love for God.

This is how Saint Valentine came to be known as the patron saint of love. He is known to connect lovers together and helped them become one. He made the couples remember their devotion to God. This is how the whole belief of Valentine’s day as a day of love started.
